Starling Murmuration Shell Bay, Studland: 16th February 2017

Starlings...  most of us have seen Starlings...  but a Starling Murmuration is without doubt one of the most spectacular sites in nature... or anywhere else...

It is a ritual at dusk for Starlings, it starts with a small group wheeling around and being joined by more and more groups until there is a huge mass of thousands of birds. They wheel around creating ever changing fluid patterns. As the ritual continues the mass will gradually come down lower, before rising and coming down until they drop as one into the reeds to roost for the night.

I've seen stadium concerts, theatre spectacualrs, major sporting events and state occasions, but very little to compare to the beauty, splndour and pure awesome wonder of the Starling murmuration... this was was at Shell Bay on Studland Peninsular.

The individual Starling in the first image may well be in the murmuration... try and pick him out in the flock...

Waxwings - Whiteley Shopping Centre 13th February 2017

I got a message from a good friend on the Sunday night... "Can you be in Whiteley tomorrow". I had no idea where it was, but checked and found yes, I could. I asked why... and was sent a picture of a Waxwing taken there that day. As a keen birdwatcher and photographer I was excited... I had never seen a Waxwing before.

So, we met up on the car park of the shopping centre the next day... had a great day photographing Waxwings... and having the odd coffee and cake... I ended up with 550 shots... there are just 20 here from what was a great day
