WELNEY WWT - OUSE WASHES
Thursday 6th February 2025
The main attraction of Welney is to see the over-wintering Whooper Swans... there is no guarantee of seeing much beyond the Swans and countless Pochard!!.. On this visit there were also some Mallard, Mute Swan, Wigeon and Greylag around, and a bank full of BlackTailed Godwits, which were fairly distant and impossible to get a decent picture of...
Most male Pochard over winter in the UK... the females are far more sensible and most go down to Spain!!... which is why there are far more male than female around!
Welney do a "Swan Feed" in the afternoon, but invariably most of the swans are away in the fields feeding, but the feed becomes a frenzy with the countless Pochard and a few Mallard... with a Whooper or two cruising serenely around amongst them!
