Guillemot young are called Jumplings. The Guillemot has one chick per year, and the male encourages it to jump off the rocks into the sea at a couple of days old, before it can fly or even its skeleton is fully formed, so when they jump they just bounce off the rocks into the sea.
Once in the water the male joins the jumpling and teaches it to fish... after a few weeks the birds go out to sea and the jumplings return to the cliffs some 4 years later when they are ready to breed. They return to the cliff they were born, to a spot only a foot or two from where they were born
